CHAPTER SIXTEEN

ALIVE

Medics crammed the operating theatre. They dealt with the injured and dead soldiers Angelique had fought. The only person who hadn’t been given a second glance was Lord Orson. It seemed a Cloud Rider wasn’t as important as a Hades man to these doctors.

Inside the crate I’d tried to stretch out my limbs as they began to cramp. Every muscle felt tangled with knots. How much longer would they be?

The last two medics helped the final soldier, whose leg Angelique had broken, limp out. I started to raise the lid, but heard footsteps approaching. Darn it – I lowered the lid again.

Through my peephole I saw Sergeant Yanton leading an old man and a dreadlocked teenager about my age into the operating theatre. They both wore dusty, grey coveralls and had short chains linking their ankles together. On each of their wrists I noticed a demon logo with a number tattooed beneath it.

They raised Orson’s body from the table and gently, like they were handling a living person, placed him on a gurney.

The moral argument cycled through my head again. Had Angelique been right to kill Lord Orson? Couldn’t we have saved him and brought him back somehow?

The sergeant shoved the elderly man. ‘Get a move on.’

Head bowed, legs shaking, the man took hold of one end of the gurney.

I clenched my jaw. Where did the sergeant get off being such a jerk?

‘I said, get moving.’ Yanton unhooked a short cane dangling from his belt and struck it across the man’s bald head. He groaned but kept his balance.

The teenager’s eyes flashed with the same fire I felt burning in my gut.

The sergeant narrowed his gaze on the boy. ‘If you want to test your luck, go ahead.’

The old man shook his head at the teenager. A slight nod and the lad dropped his shoulders. It seemed he had a lot in common with me – a short fuse that needed to be kept in check.

Yanton sneered. ‘That’s right, Zack, you teach the young pup how to toe the line.’ He twirled the cane through his fingers and smirked at the teenager. ‘Now before I decide to use this on you, get that body down to the thermal plant for incineration.’

‘Yes, sir,’ the old man replied. The teenager kept mute. I could tell even a slight prod and he’d hurl a mouthful of abuse at Yanton – just like I’d have done if that had been me.

The sergeant strode out of the operating theatre and headed back towards the lift.

From my low vantage point inside the crate I could see the matchbox reactor’s numerals clicking down. When that hit zero…

Zack and the teenager started to push the gurney to the door. What if they were here when the explosion went off? Hell, we were talking a nuclear explosion here. How many innocent people like these guys would get killed? I didn’t want their blood on my conscience – I had to warn them.

I pulled the lid back and stood up in my crate.
